For me this is the perfect hug in a mug and here´s why...
So what is this tasty little treat? Simply put it´s like a healthy hot chocolate made with a Turmeric paste and milk of your choosing. (I´d avoid the cow personally, almond or oats are my choices, but up to you.)
Why drink it? Well sipping at this hot ´cuppa´ every night could be just the rocket fuel your immune system needs to get fighting fit,
it´s anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and great tool for the anti-cancer arsenal and if all that´s not enough well it tastes pretty good too!
I used to prepare Turmeric or Golden Milk for the guests at the yoga shala in the Alpujarran mountains after a long days mountain walking, we would snuggle around the fire, wrap blankets over tired knees and shoulders and reboot over a warm hug in a mug and good old fashioned chitter chatter. Never have I ever prepare this milk for a group without being hounded for recipe. This is one of natures healers that happens to taste divine. You simply can´t go wrong.
Just a little on the Spicy Science:
Turmeric has all kinds of tricks up it´s sleeve including anti-bacterial properties (you´ll in note the recipe below first we create a paste then we use the paste to make the milk, think of it as D.I.Y. instant granules( which can also be applied topically to wounds to aid blood clotting and prevent infections. Great for a kid with a ´boo boo´In Ayurveda when combined with the milk it has ben used as a lotion of face mask, and has been used to combat Acne. A word to the wise, turmeric will stain your whole yellow if you´re not cautious do not and I repeat do not replicate my mistake of dozing off in Turmeric mask and also watch out for your clothes and kitchen surfaces, I´d suggest not using a Turmeric mask before a night out.
The anti-inflammatory effects are not just for external aches and pains, remember many things an aggravate your digestive tract, a soothing cup of Golden Milk can soothe the digestive tract and treat diarrhoea and indigestion the healthy way.
Anti-oxidants, in a nutshell:
Oxidation and free radical damage cause cells to behave very differently, they exceed their designated lifespan (which can sound like a good thing, but in the case of your cells immortality is mortally dangerous), calcify and cause plaque build up leading to heart problems, cancer, arthritis etc. We need to fill our diet with as much anti-oxidants as possible to counter act oxidisation caused by environmental stresses. Turmeric just happens to be heavy weight in this department and when we mix with black pepper we can increase bio-availabilty by enormous amounts.
Research is currently being done looking into the relationship between a diet rich in curcumin )the active ingredient in Turmeric) and onset of Alzheimer's and bowl and stomach cancers. Turmeric is one of nature's unsung heroes in modern Ayurvedic medicine it is known as ´natural aspirin´as it has the amazing ability to reduce swelling in doing so can relieve the pains that swellings cause including the dreaded headache without being corrosive to your beautiful liver (as all over the counter meds such as aspirin and paracetamol are, remember we have to process everything sooner or later)
